GEORGETOWN AT NEW BRAUNFELS CANYON

Two explosive offenses matchup in the first round when the Georgetown Eagles head to Cougar Stadium Friday night to take on New Braunfels Canyon.

Georgetown (8-2, 6-1, #3 in the Padilla Poll 5A-DI Region III) were tri-champions of 11-5A-DI with A&M Consolidated and College Station; the district tiebreakers relegated them to the third seed, making them the one team of the three forced to play on the road. Georgetown has won six straight games since losing their district opener to A&M Consolidated 48-34.

The Eagles are averaging 50 points a game in district play and 46.4 per game for the year.  (Yes, this is the third seed in the district we’re talking about)  Georgetown is led by the triplet attack of Andrew Petter (175 rushes for 1403 years and 27 TDs), Noah Booras (125 for 163 passing for 2076 yards, 26 touchdowns and 3 interceptions), and Drayden Dickmann (57 catches for 998 yards and 10 touchdowns.)

Georgetown coach Chuck Griffin is in his fourth year as the Eagles’ coach; he was the head man for two years at Troup before joining the staff at Abilene and then taking over the Eagles. Only in his first year at Troup has Griffin missed the playoffs as a head coach.

Georgetown has made the playoffs eight straight years, earning seven postseason victories in that span. The Eagles played for the state championship in 2012, losing to Denton Guyer 48-37; that was the only season in school history they advanced past the third round. Georgetown’s sister school, East View, opened in 2012.

It’s no wonder New Braunfels Canyon (9-1, 6-1, #4 in the Padilla Poll 5A-I Region III) has a scary offense – it’s led by the Addams Family.

Actually, the Adams family….

Passing game coordinator Mike Adams has one son, Deuce (2827 yards passing), playing quarterback, and another, Eli (745 yards receiving), playing wide receiver. Even with a “D” missing, the Adams family strikes fear in opposing defenses, especially since both sons are juniors.

As if that weren’t enough, the Cougars also have Xayvion Noland, who has 1260 yards receiving and 17 touchdown catches, plus a kickoff return touchdown.

The electrifying Cougar offense runs the spread under second year Travis Bush. Bush’s father Bruce had 271 wins as a high school coach – as a guru of the Slot-T offense.  This is roughly equivalent to a son driving a Corvette after his dad drove a bulldozer.

NBC is enjoying their second playoff berth and second winning season since 2013; they advanced to the third round in 2020.  The Cougars have gone to the fourth round three times: 1998, 2003, and 2005.  In 1998, Canyon lost to Comal ISD sister school Smithson Valley 7-27 in that fourth round; they were the only Comal ISD high schools at time. A rematch between Smithson Valley and Canyon is a real possibility if the Cougars advance this week.  This is especially remarkable because since 2008, Comal ISD has opened three high schools.  Two of those, Canyon Lake and Davenport, were the top two teams in 13-4A-DI.   The other school, Pieper, finished one game out of a playoff berth in their inaugural season despite having no seniors on campus.

Georgetown has never faced Canyon in the postseason, but has played against a Travis Bush led Seguin team in 2018, winning 21-6.

The winner of Friday’s game will face the Galveston Ball-Magnolia West winner in the area round.
