The Steele Knights will go from defeating one of the best teams in San Antonio…. to facing one of the best teams in Austin.

Coming off a 35-34 comeback victory over Brennan in the finale of the KSAT Pigskin Classic, Steele will host the Lake Travis Cavaliers Friday at Lehnhoff Stadium.  

Steele had 235 yards rushing and 254 yards passing…and needed every last inch of it against a Brennan offense led by Ashton Dubose.  Steele held Brennan to 67 yards rushing, but Dubose threw for 347 yards and 5 touchdowns to keep the Bears in the game.  

Dubose found Jason Love for a 38 yard TD pass with 1:07 left to give Brennan a 34-28 lead; a missed extra point left the door open for the Knights.  Chad Warner found Royal Capell for an 11 yard TD pass with 18 seconds left, and Michael Patterson’s extra point provided Steele the winning margin.  

Jaylon Bailey ran the ball 22 times for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns; 118 of his yards came on his 2 touchdown runs in the first quarter.  

The Cavaliers, state semi finalists last year, are coming off a season opening loss, unusual for a program used to losing only a playoff game in December…and maybe a district game to Westlake.  Lake Travis lost their opener 39-31 to Arlington Martin, in a nationally televised game at the Venue Formerly Known as the Ballpark in Arlington.  (Lake Travis defeated Martin 40-28 in last season’s opener.)  With Michigan State quarterback Bo Edmundson unavailable, the Cavaliers did well to remain within shouting distance of Martin.  Lake Travis focused on the running game; Nico Hamilton had 28 rushes for 195 yards and a touchdown, while Kadyn Leon added 15 carries for 181 yards and a touchdown.  

Steele will continue district play next week at Hutto.  Lake Travis begins 26-6A play next week against Buda Johnson.
