Shiner was the No. 1 team in Class 2A, Division I going into the season.

The Comanches have lived up to their ranking heading into Thursday’s 11 a.m. state final against Post at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Shiner (13-0) is an experienced team with 21 seniors aided by some talented underclassmen.

Shiner offensive coordinator Randy Palmer took advantage of the team’s experience and added some wrinkles to its veer offense.

Shiner has physically imposed its will on most opponents by chewing up the clock with long drives. But the Comanches have good team speed and have breakaway ability.

Quarterback Tyler Palmer and running backs Zane Rhodes and Trevor Haynes, all seniors, Doug Brooks, a junior, and Dalton Brooks, a sophomore who has offers from Texas and Arkansas, have combined for over 4,000 yards rushing.

The Comanches prefer to run the ball, but Palmer has shown the ability to throw to his backs or receivers.

Palmer threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Rhodes in Shiner’s 49-7 semifinal win over Timpson.

Shiner has yielded a total of 38 points in the playoffs, including 13 to No. 2 Refugio.

The Comanches avenged last year’s 45-43 loss to the Bobcats in a large part because of their special teams.

Punter Michael Williams averaged 40 yards a kick and pinned Refugio at its 2- and 1-yard line.

The latter punt set up Shiner’s go-ahead touchdown late in the first half.

The Comanches iced the win with a 25-yard field goal by Connor Winkenwerder.

The Comanches are led on defense by a front line that is anchored by Doug Brooks, who has an offer from the Houston.

Shiner’s stiffest tests have come from Class 3A, Division I state finalist Hallettsville in the season opener, Class 3A, Division II East Bernard, and Refugio in the regional round.

The Comanches won a 44-34 shootout against Hallettsville. They overcame seven turnovers and defeated East Bernard 13-7 in overtime.

Shiner had the opportunity to watch Post (15-0) in last year’s state final against Refugio.

Shiner’s ability to win the battle at the line of scrimmage on offense and defense will once again be a key factor in determining the game’s outcome.

Shiner won its first state championship in 1986 under Coach Calvin Tucker with quarterback Gilbert Price directing the offense. Price went on to play at Texas State.

The Comanches won their second state title in 2004 under Coach Steven Cerny. The team was led by running back Chris Baer, who would go on to play at Trinity.

Shiner’s last appearance in the state final was in 2013. The Comanches lost to a Stratford team that included receiver James Washington, who currently plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Shiner coach Daniel Boedeker was promoted from defensive coordinator when Cerny retired before the 2019 season.

Boedeker has state championships at Shiner as a player and a coach in baseball.
